Ceramic Coating Install Process
Installing Fireball Dok Do Ceramic Coating on a BMW X5
Bringing New Life to a BMW X5 with Fireball Ceramic Coating
At Firepower Detailing in Tyler, TX, we recently had the pleasure of working on a stunning BMW X5. This particular vehicle featured BMW’s elegant Imperial Blue Metallic paint, alloy wheels, and a Black Optics Package that gave it a sleek, modern look. To preserve its beauty and protect it from future wear and tear, we applied our 10-year Fireball Dok Do Ceramic Coating. Follow along as we take you step-by-step through the process we used to transform this vehicle.
The Unique Challenges of BMW's Imperial Blue Paint
The Imperial Blue Metallic paint on this X5 boasts incredible depth and richness. However, this European paint blend is known for being harder than many domestic finishes, making it more challenging to correct defects. Its glossy, reflective surface also highlights imperfections like scratches and swirls, making it a prime candidate for ceramic coating protection.
Inspection and Decontamination: Preparing the Surface
We started with a thorough inspection using our custom checklists to document every imperfection. Our team identified multiple areas that required correction before coating could begin.
Decontamination Process
Decontamination is a vital first step to ensure the surface is free of contaminants that could cause further damage during cleaning or polishing.
Iron Burn Application: We treated the paint, wheels, tires, and glass with Fireball Iron Burn, a gentle yet powerful cleaner designed to dissolve contaminants without damaging the surface.
Double Wash Procedure: Using Fireball PH3 Foaming Shampoo, we washed the car twice—once with a light dilution for pre-cleaning and then with a thicker foam solution for a deeper clean. The process left the X5 spotless and ready for the next step.
Paint Correction: Restoring the Shine
With the surface prepped, we moved on to paint correction. Because of the hardness of the Imperial Blue paint and the depth of the scratches, this X5 required a three-step correction process.
Tools and Techniques
We used a combination of Rupes and Flex rotary polishers to tackle the scratches, swirls, and imperfections. Since the ceramic coating would replace the clear coat, we focused on achieving a flawless finish, knowing the Fireball Dok Do coating would lock in the results and provide superior protection.
Applying the Fireball Dok Do Ceramic Coating
Why Dok Do?
We selected Fireball Dok Do for its ultra-hard, 9H-rated protection. This top-tier ceramic coating not only enhances the car's gloss but also shields it from minor scratches, environmental contaminants, and long-term wear.
Application Process
For application, we used Fireball’s premium suede and foam applicator blocks. One challenge with installing high-quality coatings like Dok Do is the drying process—applicators can stiffen quickly, risking scratches if not changed out regularly. To avoid this, we switched applicators for every large panel, ensuring flawless results.
We coated the entire vehicle, including the undercarriage areas like the running boards and hard-to-reach spots such as the roof center. After applying the two-layer coating and allowing it to cure, the BMW’s finish was radiant, smooth, and better protected than ever.
